Nevertheless it, too, is concerned with impurity, merely of a different source and mode of contagion.

According to this system, acting immorally contaminates the Community and contaminates the Land. Notably, Leviticus 18 bookends its list of moral guidelines by contrasting Egyptian and Canaanite behavior with how the Israelites are expected to act. (18.3,24-25). The passage asserts that the Israelites’ Egyptian overlords engaged in immoralities, which the Israelites left behind in the triumphs of Exodus. Moreover, the Israelites conquer Canaan by virtue of the Land vomiting out the sinning, immoral Canaanites, and they need to act appropriately in order to remain in the Land.

This national form of impurity, sometimes called “moral impurity,” had largely been forgotten by traditional Jewish readers. From this perspective, which became popular with some groups of religious Jews, dwelling in the Land is a mixed blessing – a great privilege, yes, but one that demands an extremely high degree of moral and ethical piety where the stakes of misbehavior can have national, even cosmic, significance.

Not just a matter of personal choice, holiness is a very public morality: the stakes of misbehavior can have national, even cosmic, significance.
"":null
