“Whoever from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who sojourn among you, who eats any manner of blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people.<\/span>” <\/span>(Leviticus 17:10)<\/span><\/p>\n

I.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the silence of the summer’s desert night I stare at the stars and recall
\nHow beautiful are your palaces, O Egypt,
\nHow awesome your Temple of Amon, O Karnak,
\nHow illustrious your hundred gates, O Thebes<\/p>\n

II.<\/span><\/p>\n

We slaves could eat only onions, garlic and onions.
\nBut when I worked as a serving-boy in my master\u2019s banquet-hall
\nI could smell the tantalizing scent of crocodile-meat soaked in blood.
\nOnce, during the Feast of the Birth of Horus,
\nMy master, drunk, threw me a piece.
\nI remember the taste still.<\/p>\n

One autumn morning I accompanied my master\u2019s son
\nWhere I first saw how gladiators, prisoners-of-war from Kush,
\nCould gain freedom by clubbing their opponent to death,
\nBreaking skulls and bones and dipping their hands in the blood.<\/p>\n

When my master\u2019s son was appointed as one of Pharaoh\u2019s charioteers,
\nI was allowed to watch the army parade by as it went off to battle in Nubia
\nFor the greater glory of Pharaoh.
\nFirst marched the foot-soldiers,
\nHands held upright
\nAnd in goose-steps,
\nVowing their oath of homage as they pledged,
\n\u201cWe who march to your victories salute you
\nAnd swear our allegiance to you, O Pharaoh,
\nFather of the Nile, sun of the nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

III.<\/span><\/p>\n

One spring night during the Festival of the Full-Moon,
\nI went to the Temple of Hathor
\nWhere the young priestess chose me above all the others
\nAnd allowed me to drink from the sacred goblet of red wine spiced with pig\u2019s blood,
\nBefore she initiated me into the rites of Hathor, our holy mother of Eternal-Life,
\nIn the light of the full moon.<\/p>\n

IV.<\/span><\/p>\n

If I forget you,
\nMay my right hand lose its cunning,
\nMay my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,
\nIf I do not set you,
\nO Egypt,
