\u201cThe leper, who has been infected, \u2014 his clothes shall be rent, his hair shall be left disheveled, and he shall cover over his upper lip; and he shall call out, \u2018Impure! Impure!\u2019 \u00a0As long as he is infected, he shall be impure; he shall dwell alone, outside the camp of his residence.\u201d (Leviticus 13:45-46)<\/span><\/p>\n

I rend my shirt.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>My skin, pale-white, covered with ruptured boils,<\/span>
\n<\/span>My flesh, putrid and decomposing.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The camp I cannot enter,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The gate I cannot open. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The purity I left behind,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The impurity I now inhale. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The spring of water which has turned dry,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The oasis that has become a mirage. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The date palms I uprooted,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The vines I neglected. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The lyre I cracked,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The flute I broke. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The woman I will never marry,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The children I will never father. <\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The stars I extinguished,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The moons I shattered.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mourn<\/span>
\n<\/span>The lantern I lost,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The darkness which has swallowed me. <\/span><\/p>\n

I immerse in a <\/span>mikvah<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A dead lizard in my hand. <\/span><\/p>\n

I murmur, over and over again,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The prayer my mother taught me:<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside my life’s shadow,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Be You, my God, a candle,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The light of my eyes;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Be You the lightning<\/span>
\n<\/span>In my night’s darkest skies.<\/span><\/p>\n
