God speaks of the animals we may eat<\/span>
\n<\/span>and the animals we may not:<\/span>
\n<\/span>we may eat<\/span>
\n<\/span>cloven-footed beasts that chew their cud;<\/span>
\n<\/span>insects with jumping legs<\/span>
\n<\/span>like crickets, grasshoppers, locusts;<\/span>
\n<\/span>we may not eat<\/span>
\n<\/span>rabbits, pigs, eagles, owls, mice.<\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/span><\/p>\n

God says we may eat<\/span>
\n<\/span>any creature of the water<\/span>
\n<\/span>with fins and scales,<\/span>
\n<\/span>but no other water-creatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/span><\/p>\n

God mentions beasts, birds, vermin by name.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He mentions nothing of the water by name.<\/span>
\n<\/span>For creatures of the water,<\/span>
\n<\/span>God mentions only qualities.<\/span><\/p>\n

ii<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps this is because<\/span>
\n<\/span>God speaks to a desert people.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the desert,<\/span>
\n<\/span>the people know beasts,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Birds,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Vermin.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But the sea is far away.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Water and the fish and the animals in it<\/span>
\n<\/span>are far away.<\/span>
\n<\/span>So perhaps these people<\/span>
\n<\/span>have many names for beasts,<\/span>
\n<\/span>birds,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Vermin\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>but few names<\/span>
\n<\/span>for the creatures of the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/span><\/p>\n

So God does not mention<\/span>
\n<\/span>the creatures of the water<\/span>
\n<\/span>by name;<\/span>
\n<\/span>God merely describes.<\/span><\/p>\n

iii<\/span><\/p>\n

To say:<\/span>
\n<\/span>God does not speak to us<\/span>
\n<\/span>in spiritual codes<\/span>
\n<\/span>in lofty constructs;<\/span>
\n<\/span>God speaks to us<\/span>
\n<\/span>in the language we speak<\/span>
\n<\/span>in the lives we live,<\/span>
\n<\/span>as the people<\/span>
\n<\/span>we actually are.<\/span><\/p>\n
