I.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stand outside the entrance to a synagogue.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Despite the heavy rain, I hear<\/span><\/p>\n

Them read in the Torah how<\/span>
\n<\/span>Balaam\u2019s donkey saw an angel\u2019s hand and sword.<\/span><\/p>\n

I oink loudly, \u201cLet me in, I want to pray,\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>And pound my cloven hoofs on the thick wooden door.<\/span><\/p>\n

But they all stand unmoving in silent prayer<\/span>
\n<\/span>And my hoofs cannot open the door-handle.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stand outside the window of a <\/span>yeshivah<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>And brush aside the snow, and wipe the frost;<\/span><\/p>\n

Inside, pupils sit and listen to the <\/span>Rav<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>Explain the laws of the ox that gores.<\/span><\/p>\n

I oink loudly, \u201cLet me in, I want to learn,\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>And pound my cloven hoofs on the window pane.<\/span><\/p>\n

But thick snow muffles my voice<\/span>
\n<\/span>And winter winds drown out my beating on the iced glass.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stand outside the fence of a house Friday night<\/span>
\n<\/span>And in the dark, watch candles burn; I smell<\/span><\/p>\n

Chicken soup and stuffed fish the wife has cooked<\/span>
\n<\/span>As her husband chants of a gazelle on hills of myrrh.<\/span><\/p>\n

I oink loudly, \u201cLet me in, I want to eat,\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>And pound my cloven hoofs on the latched gate.<\/span><\/p>\n

But night\u2019s blackness hides me from their sight.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In my small, beady pink eyes are tears.<\/span><\/p>\n

I, who was born in mud,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The son of an obese sow and a drunken wild boar,<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask: Is there no passage, no verse, no word, no letter<\/span>
\n<\/span>That will let me in?<\/span><\/p>\n

Does not the God of Israel desire the heart?<\/span>
\n<\/span>In His Tent of Meeting, where is my place?<\/span><\/p>\n

For I have read in Psalms: \u201cThough my father and my mother forsake me,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The Lord will take me in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

II.<\/span><\/p>\n

each night the pig lies in his sty and dreams;<\/span>
\n<\/span>each night the same gray dream returns:<\/span><\/p>\n

alone on a raft \u2014 under a black clouded sky \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span> with no oars, no rudder, no helm;<\/span><\/p>\n

alone on a raft \u2014 under a moonless sky \u2014he drifts<\/span>
\n<\/span>on a flowing river, toward a distant waterfall<\/span><\/p>\n

and each night he hears the same high-pitched voice squeak:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>no way out, no way off, Bacon-Boy.<\/span>
\n<\/span> did you really think, Porker-Porkchops,<\/span>
\n<\/span>a sow\u2019s ear could become a silken purse?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

did you really imagine, Swiney-Whiney,<\/span>
\n<\/span> they would agree to circumcise<\/span>
\n<\/span> a castrated pig? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

get on your knees and kneel, Wholly Hog;<\/span>
\n<\/span> for blessed are the piglets;<\/span>
