{"id":44699,"date":"2018-11-27T15:50:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-27T13:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=44699"},"modified":"2022-06-21T11:34:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T08:34:34","slug":"in-praise-of-our-elders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/in-praise-of-our-elders\/","title":{"rendered":"In Praise Of Our Elders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[419,372],"acf":{"old_id":"44699","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":33877,"related_cahpter":"99","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Midrashic insight into the dedication of the Mishkan","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of Leviticus, Chapter 9, we are told of the sin-offering following the seven days of dedication of the\u00a0<em>mishkan, <\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabernacle<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the priests, Aaron and his sons, the \u201cElders of Israel\u201d are called upon to be part of this ceremony, serving as representatives of the whole people of Israel assembled in the Desert: \u201cOn the eighth day Moses called Aaron and his sons, <\/span>and the Elders of Israel <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Leviticus 9:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The midrash addresses the question why the Elders should have been accorded such honor:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRabbi Akivah said: Israel may be compared to a bird. Just as a bird is unable to fly without wings, so too Israel are unable to do anything without their Elders [i.e. rabbinic sages].<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yose ben Halafta said: A great thing is mature wisdom. If they [who possess it] are old, they are beloved; if they are young, their youthfulness is secondary\u2026. In the World to Come, too, the Holy One, blessed be He, will accord honor to the Elders, as it is written, \u201cFor the Lord of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem and before His Elders shall be honor\u201d (Isaiah 24:23)\u2026[This verse suggests that] in the future the Holy One, blessed be He, will appoint for Himself an Academy [<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeshivah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] of Elders of His own\u2026 for in the verse cited, it is not written \u2018before Elders \u2018, but \u2018before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elders shall be honor\u2019.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Abin said&#8230;in the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will sit in judgement [as in the Yavneh Sanhedrin whose members sat in a semicircle facing each other] in a (round) <\/span><em>goren<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [threshing floor] with the righteous sitting before Him\u2026King Solomon said: \u201cHer master [Israel\u2019s God] is known in the gates [of judgement], when He sits among the Elders of the land\u201d (Proverbs 31:23)\u201d (Leviticus Rabbah 11:8). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have here a marvelous depiction of the Messianic future in which God as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosh metivta<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Rabbinic Head of a Heavenly Yeshivah, will sit in judgement with our righteous Elders. \u00a0What greater praise could be found for the elderly of our time?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image:\u00a0
