At first glance, God’s speech is an uneventful beginning to the book, one of many such occurrences in the life of Moses. And yet, the verb “He called” is highly unusual as far as divine utterances go. Here, God does not just speak (more common); He calls. He does not communicate to all, but to Moses alone. And He does not project the divine voice outwards, but keeps it inside the tent, an intimate whisper into Moses’ ear.

The rabbis of the Midrash on Leviticus read this verse with a full stop before the particular legislation that follows. Never mind for now the laws of the olah offering; the primary wisdom is hidden in that opening moment when God reaches out to Moses. One midrash inflects the verse as a kind of nudge on God’s behalf, as if to say, “Nu, Moses! Enough with the humility! For too long, you have stood off to the side rather than step up to the plate. At the sea, I had to coax you to raise your staff. Even at Mount Sinai, you needed an invitation to ascend. I am calling to you now inside the tent of meeting, because it is you and only you who can hear My voice. Step up, please. Come closer.”

This midrashic reading startles because we are accustomed to valorizing Moses’ humility. We regularly learn from his example how to think a bit less of ourselves, how to wear our accomplishments with less fanfare, how to take up less space in a room. And we will always need this lesson, as human nature goes.

And yet, the Midrash reminds us that humility can run in excess. A healthy awareness of our limitations– if nourished unchecked– can slide into self-criticism, self-doubt, and in the realm of leadership, failure to act. Assuming timely leadership means showing up, taking action and hearing the call — even when we may not feel like we are the expert, or even the best person for the job. Ultimately, acting as a leader should not be an exercise of the ego but seizing the opportunity to fill a niche demand just when it is needed. If we wait, the moment can easily pass us by.

2019-05-05
