Where once our ancestors offered animals, now, lacking a Temple, we offer words. Yet the essential act is the same in both cases: a giving of self to God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Judaism, to love is to give. Jewish marriage is consecrated by the gift of a ring. It is not that the recipient needs to receive. It is that love is emotion turned outward. Love is the sacrifice of self to other, and the result is k-r-v, the \u201ccoming close\u201d that is the root of the word <em>korban<\/em>, \u201csacrifice.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of Leviticus, the book containing many of the details of the sacrifices, the Torah states, \u201cWhen a person offers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of you <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an offering to the Lord\u201d (Lev. 1:2). The order of the words is unexpected: it would be more natural to say, \u201cWhen one of you brings an offering.\u201d From this, the Jewish mystics concluded that the real offering is \u201cof you,\u201d that is, of self. The animals were the outer form of the command, but its essential core is the inward act of self-sacrificing love. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why, after the destruction of the Temple, prayer could substitute for sacrifice, for true prayer is the giving of self, the acknowledgement that without God we are a mere concatenation of chemicals that will one day turn to dust. Only by the gift of self to the eternal God do we touch \u2013 and are touched by \u2013 eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excerpted from the <\/span><i><span
