Over time, the use in Jewish ceremonies and rituals of fabric and garments has become a constant. They have developed in response to custom and interpretation and often borrow from the fabric work of the larger society. They are tactile objects we hold and look at, many are now rich with colour, and many have been embellished or incorporate texture and appliqué, sometimes more sometimes less. The items are very familiar to us. They include, among others, the talit (prayer shawl); the kippah/yarmulkeh (skull cap); the parochet (ark cover); covers for the afikomen, the ceremonial matzah at the Passover seder dinner and for the challah, the Sabbath bread; the chuppah, the marriage canopy; the mappah, the wimple that binds the scrolls of the Torah and another that holds the instruments of circumcision; the ritual white robes of the kittel and tachrich; and the bedecken, the marriage veil.

In my images referring to the “tabernacle”, I explore symbols and motifs in selected ceremonial fabrics to explore the boundaries between what is known and what is beyond understanding.
