But if the desert usually calls up images of emptiness, wasteland and boredom, the desert of the book of Exodus is exactly the opposite. What doesn&#8217;t happen there? Journeys and seductions, thunder and lightning, crimes and punishments, a golden calf and some broken tablets, dolphin skins and acacia trees.<\/p>\n<p>But here too we can learn a lesson from the Book. After 12 desert chapters, which seem to come from a suspense and action genre, where there isn&#8217;t a dull moment, and the People of Israel is always in some tense bind, either with each other, or with their Maker, or mainly with their flesh-and-blood leader, Moses our Teacher, suddenly the tension drops, and we enter the daily grind of a construction overseer. 14 long chapters \u2013 more than half of the chapters devoted to the time in the desert \u2013 deal almost entirely with the technicalities of the very detailed instructions of the building of the Tabernacle (mishkan) down to the very construction process.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the Torah here is trying to tell us something about ourselves and our lives: there&#8217;s a place for storms, for fights, for wandering and for journeys.
