The Greek translators of the Septuagint apparently were none too happy with the rather tepid name of the second book of the Torah. “Shemot” (literally: “names”) just wasn’t enough of a teaser for them, or sexy enough for the average Greek reader. So they decided to change the name to “Exodus,” which hints a little more successfully at the drama within.<\/p>\n

Greeks knew a thing or two about drama, as we know from the plays that Aristophanes among others left behind. But the Jewish Torah stubbornly stuck with Shemot. As if to say to all of us, whoa there, slow down, friends. There’s a time and a place for everything.\u00a0 First let’s see what’s what and who’s who, with all the names, and then we can exit with great wealth.<\/p>\n

And so, no less than eleven opening chapters are taken up with the lives of the Israelites in Egypt, in great detail, two full chapters devoted to the preparations to the great leaving, and then just two chapters to the Exodus itself.<\/p>\n

Translators, be careful in your translations, and that goes both for Greeks translating the Torah, and those who are the sort that uploads in a half hour a translation of the new episode of “Game of Thrones.”<\/p>\n
