Throughout our tradition, we find ourselves playing hide-and-seek with the Holy One, millennia of peek-a-boo as we seek the divine and it seems hidden. Then we turn our attention elsewhere, and suddenly there it finds us!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That paradox of hiding in plain view has its most famous locale in the newly constructed Tabernacle. At the end of the Book of Exodus, at the conclusion of the tale of our liberation and our building the Mishkan, we are told, \u201cWhen Moses finished the work, the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.\u201d Lovely: we know precisely where God is to be found. But that precise knowledge of God\u2019s presence is countered by the fog-like clouds that filled the place as well. You can know where God is located, but you can\u2019t see anything. Or, when the cloud lifts and you have some vision, then you know that God is no longer there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently, God likes a quantum tease \u2013 either location or velocity, either presence or vision. Our paradoxical take on the Divine is one of elusive seeking and persistent hiding, clarity of what meets our eyes, but no holiness left. Or redolent with divinity, but able to see and assess nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is the paradox of the mystic and the poet. Pointing through silence, cadence, or symphony to evoke intuitions and emotions that can\u2019t be caught in precise logic or exacting words. Either clarity of vision (but no God), or deep resonances of holiness (but no precise measurements or analysis).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge is to hold tight to both impulses: to analyze and weigh where such sense data presents itself, and to intuit and feel where such emotions appear.
