In this chapter, we recap the process through which the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em> (tabernacle) was constructed and the priestly vestments manufactured. A recurring theme (seven times!) within the chapter is \u201cjust as God had instructed,\u201d culminating with \u201cMoses observed all the labor and behold they had performed it just as God had instructed, and Moses blessed them\u201d (v. 43).<\/span><\/p>\n

A similar phrase concludes an earlier production effort: Creation. \u201cGod blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, for on it He relaxed from all the labor He had performed\u201d (Genesis 2:3).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moses blessed the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em> upon the completion of its human labors, whereas God both blessed and sanctified Shabbat at the conclusion of His divine labors. Why the added ingredient of sanctification? Harold Fish, professor of English and comparative literature at Bar Ilan University, speculated as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet there is surely something wrong with a scheme that makes the “very good” (<\/span>tob me’od<\/span><\/em>) of Gen. 1:31 the moment of supreme aesthetic gratification that comes when a work of art has been completed… The moment \u2018when the artist steps back a little and surveys his handiwork with delight\u2019 would more fittingly correspond with the contemplative posture of the day of rest, when indeed there is a completion… the “goodness” of the six days carries us to the supreme moment of completion of the seventh day. \u00a0But when we get to that moment, we find not a moony space of aesthetic delight, not the category of <\/span>tob<\/span><\/em> at all, but rather that of holiness (2:3). \u00a0For God declares the seventh day not <\/span>yafeh<\/span><\/em> or <\/span>tob<\/span><\/em>, but <\/span>qadosh<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0For six days the work had been beautiful; to the seventh day, when it arrives, he awards the title of holy\u201d (<\/span>Poetry with a Purpose<\/span>, Indiana, 1988, p. 21).<\/span><\/p>\n
