{"id":43734,"date":"2018-11-11T20:20:56","date_gmt":"2018-11-11T18:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=43734"},"modified":"2022-06-06T17:28:58","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T14:28:58","slug":"one-is-a-corruptible-number","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/one-is-a-corruptible-number\/","title":{"rendered":"One Is A Corruptible Number"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":50634,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[528,402,723,724],"acf":{"old_id":"43734","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":33992,"related_cahpter":"88","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"If even as righteous a leader as Moses needed an established system of shared responsibility, then how much the more so do the leaders of our age!","content":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In speaking of the funds collected to establish the Mishkan (the Tabernacle) in the wilderness, the Torah records \u201cThese are the records of the Tabernacle, the Tabernacle of the Pact, which were drawn up at Moses\u2019 bidding\u2014the work of the Levites under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the kohen (Exodus 38:21).\u201d \u00a0Why didn\u2019t the Torah just say that these were the records Moses drew up? Why all that extra verbiage about the Levites and about Ithamar?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rabbis of antiquity were both careful readers of the Torah and skilled communal leaders. \u00a0It was a rabbinic enactment in Mishnah Shekalim that \u201cone must not appoint less than two people with control over the finances of a city or a community.\u201d \u00a0The reason for that law was that if only one person was in charge of the finances, he would be tempted to misuse the funds, to use them for personal gain, or he would be an easy target for bribery. \u00a0But a second overseer would be able to keep watch over the first, and vice-versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there must be two appointed in charge of any funds, asks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Sh\u2019mot Rabbah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then what of Moses being in charge of the funds for the Mishkan? \u00a0Is it possible that Moses would violate halakhah (Jewish law)? \u201cThe answer is that though Moses was the sole treasurer, yet he called others to audit the accounts with him\u2026 namely, through Moses but \u2018under the direction of Ithamar.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If even as righteous a leader as Moses, a man who spoke with God face to face, needed an established system of supervision and shared responsibility, then how much the more so do the leaders of our age, people who are fallible and imperfect like the rest of us. Moses, by example, set the standard not only in the realms of honesty, piety, and a passion for justice, but also gave us an invaluable lesson in how to avoid temptation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of us can afford to fly solo. \u00a0When we attempt to go it alone, whatever the field or area, we leave a blind spot where our own faults, ignorance, or biases lurk. We make ourselves and those dependent on us victims of our own shortcomings.
