Ever sensitive to seemingly extraneous verses, words, and even letters, commentators twist themselves into knots in justifying why every ounce of biblical material is necessary. And while there are indeed some new formulations in the extensive reprise at the end of Exodus, this would certainly not justify the repetition of the Tabernacle construction in its entirety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question is only a question if we think of the Torah as a text merely to be studied and understood. In truth, the Torah is first and foremost a text performed when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parshiyot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are read in the synagogue. From a performative perspective, even if a text does not teach anything new, it still can have aesthetic value. Think of an experimental movie or play that stages identical scenes at different points in the piece, or better, a song, whose stanzas repeat throughout. In this way, the reading of the final chapters in Exodus is the very moment when the Tabernacle, whose detailed architectural plans we studied earlier in the book, is performatively constructed.
