So much of the Book of Exodus is preoccupied by either spoken adumbration of Divine Law or the miraculous transactions of Exodus and Revelation. The plagues blew through the physical world, touching it and altering it with singularity. The manna, the clouds of glory were Divinely synthesized. The Golden Calf seems like it was poured straight from an admixture of desperation and bacchanal. Anyway, the next morning it melted away when the music died down and Moses, and sobriety, returned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enterprise that occupies this chapter seems different. We get an intimate view into the world of things, a construction site where craftsmen bustle around, supply chines are hastily erected, and materials are pooled and distributed. The reader almost feels like she is in the way, wandering without a hard hat, trying to dodge teetering piles of donations and trip wires of unspooled yarn. The insistently repeated verb here is \u201cto make,\u201d an imperative of general labor that is further broken down into subspecialties and peculiar corners of craft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this feels somehow therapeutic, and it was meant to be. After the listless waiting for Moses and then the frenzy of the Golden Calf and his return, the Jewish people had to be built from the ground up, riven and soldered into a more durable entity than the one that had thus far struggled to finds its footing. This combination of labor and detail suggests a different way of being in the world, one where the human mind and body engage themselves in the projects of mending and building.
