At the same time, we are a society that scores, evaluates, certifies and imposes standards \u2013 all the very opposite of inclusion. How do we reconcile these two opposing trends, the desire to be open to all on the one hand and the opposing urge to maintain quality control, limiting who gets to do what? Are we open to everyone participating, or do we want only the best? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s chapter of Tanakh addresses this dichotomy head on. \u201cTake from among you gifts to the Lord; everyone whose heart so moves them shall bring them&#8221; (35:5). Apparently, the standard for bringing donations to the building of the Tabernacle is one simple one: the desire to make a gift. Anyone who seeks to contribute is welcome. No gifts are turned away. Radical welcome at work: everyone in ancient Israel can be part of this magnificent community enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>But that radical welcome has a limit. \u201cLet all among you who are skilled come and make all that the Lord has commanded (35:10).\u201d While everyone is able to supply materials and funds to participate in the project, only those with the necessary skills are permitted to do the work of erecting the Tabernacle. Intention isn\u2019t enough; competence and talent are also necessary.<\/p>\n<p>So it is in our times as well. We don\u2019t do a good enough job of making it clear that we want everyone to participate, to join in, to make us whole by their attendance and enthusiasm and open hearts. And, at the same time, we want to ask those who have the requisite skills to be the ones to lead the tasks that help us to be vibrant, value-driven communities.<\/p>\n<p>As Rambam knew, it is the Golden Mean, that middle balance of openness and selectivity, welcome and standards that will allow us to fashion the community institutions which will help propel us forward.
