Walking down Fifth Avenue a number of weeks ago I snapped a picture of a statue on a \u00a0church on 90<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-43184 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler1-1-e1541079456730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler1-1-e1541079456730.jpg 240w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler1-1-e1541079456730-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This statue is of course just one of hundreds that depict our great prophet and lawgiver with horns. The Most well-known statue of a horned Moses is Michelangelo\u2019s statue, exhibited in the church of St. Peter in Chains in Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-43185 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The horns are traced back to the Vulgate, St. Jerome\u2019s 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century translation of the Bible into Latin. The word Keren, from the root KRN, \u00a0has many possible meanings, but most commonly is a horn, the Vulgate\u2019s reading \u201chis face was horned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome\u2019s mistranslation has not only been depicted in numerous statues, it also made its way into many Anti-Semitic creeds, the horned Jews in league with the devil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Bena Elisha Medjuck, in a thesis written twenty years ago, argues convincingly that Jerome\u2019s translation wasn\u2019t mistaken but was deliberate. In many ancient society horns were symbols of strength and power. \u00a0One such example (and there are many) is the depiction of Alexander the Great in a Greek silver coin with ram\u2019s horns. (displayed at the British Museum)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-43186 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler3.jpg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler3.jpg.png 475w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler3.jpg-300x294.png 300w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ex34-Gitler3.jpg-429x420.png 429w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome intentionally chose the translation of horn, because horns conveyed the idea that Moses was a man of incredible strength, power, and glory due to his speaking with God.
