Sinai to receive two replacement tablets for those he shattered upon seeing the Israelites celebrating the golden calf. This second revelation bears some similarities to the original revelation of the Law but we note some striking differences as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key verse in this regard is v. 28:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He remained there with God forty days and forty nights, not eating bread nor drinking water, and he inscribed on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again Moses spent 40 days and 40 nights atop the mountain (compare Exodus 24:18), foregoing food and drink (compare Deut. 9:9), and he descended with two stone tablets. This time, however, rather than having been written \u201cwith a divine finger\u201d (31:18) the tablets were inscribed by Moses himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the changed circumstances, there is a remarkable change in Moses himself. As the very next verse informs us, \u201c\u2026Moses did not realize that his face was shining when speaking to Him [God].\u201d This shining (Hebrew: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, (mis)interpreted in some medieval texts and art as horns) forced Moses to veil his face while speaking to the people, removing it only to speak, again, with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verse 23 of the previous chapter, God had cautioned Moses \u201c\u2026You shall see My back but My face will not be visible.\u201d Taken together with verses. 23-25 of our current chapter, this yields a remarkable symmetry: Just as God\u2019s face cannot be viewed, so could Moses\u2019s face not be viewed, implying that his proximity to God and his instrumentality in delivering the Law had elevated him to a position that was nearly divine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span
