The first were \u2018the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets\u2019 (Ex. 32: 16). The second tablets were hewn by Moses himself, though the writing was done by God. Despite their greater sanctity, the first tablets did not last \u2013 as if, like a meteorite, they disintegrated on entering earth\u2019s atmosphere. There are some things too holy to survive. Wholly divine, they are too sacred to be fully integrated into the life of human beings. The second tablets were the result of a partnership between Moses and God \u2013 and they did survive. Moses himself was changed as the result of his participation. His face shone. After the first tablets, where he was merely the passive recipient of God\u2019s gift, he was still the same Moses. After second, he was different. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are changed, not by what we receive, but what we do<\/span><\/i><span
