In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses with the Tables of the Law<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Guido Reni, Moses simply holds the tablets, while in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses Destroys the Tables of the Ten Commandments<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by James Tissot he prepares to throw them in response to the sin of the Golden Calf. Marc Chagall, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses Breaking the Tablets of the Law,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0illustrates the next moment, after the tablets have alrea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dy been dropped. The three artists&#8217; depictions of Moshe vary, reflecting their different understanding of his emotions at this juncture. Exodus 32:19 states that \u201che hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain,\u201d which is commonly understood to mean that Moses intentionally smashed the tablets. The medieval commentator Rashbam, though, suggests that upon seeing the Golden Calf, Moses\u2019 strength left him and the tablets fell from his hands.
