The thre<\/span>e images discussed here all display Moshe with the Tablets of the Covenant, but at slightly different points in the Biblical narrative. In <\/span>Moses with the Tables of the Law<\/span><\/i> by Guido Reni, Moses simply holds the tablets, while in <\/span>Moses Destroys the Tables of the Ten Commandments<\/span><\/i> by James Tissot he prepares to throw them in response to the sin of the Golden Calf. Marc Chagall, in <\/span>Moses Breaking the Tablets of the Law,<\/span><\/i> \u00a0illustrates the next moment, after the tablets have alrea<\/span>dy been dropped. The three artists’ depictions of Moshe vary, reflecting their different understanding of his emotions at this juncture. Similarly, their portrayals of the tablets differ, highlighting how little we really know about their shape, size, and what was written on each of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reni depicts Moses still \u00a0holding the tablets, before he has thrown them.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Tissot’s image, an angry Moses is about to heave the tablets down below.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Chagall’s painting, in contrast, Moshe looks as if he has simply dropped the stones.<\/span><\/p>\n

What really happened? Exodus 32:19 states that \u201che hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain,\u201d which is commonly understood to mean that Moses intentionally smashed the tablets. The medieval commentator Rashbam, though, suggests that upon seeing the Golden Calf, Moses\u2019 strength left him and the tablets fell from his hands. Instead of focusing on Moshe’s anger, Rashbam and Chagall highlight Moses\u2019 frustration and disappointment with the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n
