Sinai. After defending the Israelites to God and asking for mercy, Moses heads down the mountain to see for himself what is happening, only to grow outraged. He reacts instantaneously, breaking the two tablets that bore God\u2019s writing: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became enraged; and he hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain (Exod 32:19).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are we to understand Moses\u2019 quick action to destroy the tablets? Did he not just spend over a month receiving the law and speaking directly to God?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashbam, a medieval exegete, suggests that Moses found himself growing weak from upset, and so cast aside his heavy burden \u2013 which just so happened to be the tablets. In this interpretation, Moses\u2019 purpose is not to smash the tablets; instead, the breaking of the tablets is incidental to Moses\u2019 distress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, Ibn Ezra (another medieval exegete) views the breaking of the tablets as deliberate and meaningful: \u201cout of his great zeal, Moses broke the tablets that were in his hands like a document of testimony. And [it is like] he tore a document of conditions.\u201d In this view, the tablets constituted a kind of legal document between God and Israel, which Moses effectively tore up by breaking them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, \u201cbreaking the tablets\u201d is an exact translation of a well-attested phrase from the legal vocabulary of the ancient Near East: the Akkadian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e6duppam<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e2bep\u00fb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u2018to break the tablet\u2019, was commonly used for invalidating a contract. Reasons to invalidate a contract include there being something wrong with the contract in the first place, or because \u2013 as in Exodus 32 \u2013 a party to the contract had done something wrong. (The same expression could be used to refer to the ending of an agreement, where the contract terms had been fulfilled. Breaking it would prove that no obligations remained.)
