A clue is provided in our chapter, and mirrored in Leviticus 8.

In Exodus 29:1, Moses is told about a time in the future when he will consecrate his brother Aaron and Aaron’s sons. He is told to take a list of ritual objects and then to bring Aaron forward: “ve-et Aharon ubanav takriv.” The verb used here, takriv, means “bring closer” but is also the same one used as for offerings, as though Aaron and his sons are being offered by Moses. In Leviticus, when this ritual is carried out, the point is even sharper: in 8:1, Moses is told to take a whole list: Aaron, his sons, their clothing, the oil, the animals…

Reading Exodus 29, it is clear that Moses is the actor and Aaron and sons, the new Cohanim (priests) are the objects, just one of many new vessels of the Temple. Moses washes them, clothes them, pours oil on them. Eventually, he sprinkles the blood of the sacrifices on them. Perhaps this can serve as a warning to potential future leaders: many may seek power, but it is only suited to those who are willing to give up something of themselves to become public property.

In fact, the only active action the new Cohanim take in this chapter is to put their hands on the heads of the sacrificial animals, symbolizing a transfer of personal sin to the animal. This might even sharpen our point: our Cohanim must assume the downsides of being public property, but like others, they still have personal sins. When we reach Leviticus 10, this tragic dichotomy will be heightened by the tale of the deaths of Nadav and Avihu. Even outside that story, it reminds us all who would aspire to high office: as a public figure, you must be prepared to surrender some autonomy in order to become a vessel of the community.

2019-05-05
