The consecration of the priests. Blood and guts and smoke. And ear ridges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exodus 29 is one of those chapters that reminds us just how <\/span>bizarre<\/span><\/em> the Tanakh is, and maybe makes us ask if it isn\u2019t sometimes <\/span>too<\/span><\/i> bizarre to have anything to say to us. Speaking personally, I <\/span>want<\/span><\/em> this chapter to say something, because of the way the gory details are framed:<\/span><\/p>\n

This is what you shall do to them to make them holy, to serve Me\u2026There I will meet with the Israelites, and it shall be sanctified by My Presence… I will abide among the Israelites, and I will be their God.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there\u2019s something I can learn from this chapter about how to turn my life into a Tent of Meeting and my actions into service of God, I want to know it. The consecration of the priests is about me, and you too, because we were commanded to be \u201ca kingdom of priests and a holy nation\u201d (Ex. 19:6).<\/span><\/p>\n

When I look at the chapter, within the frame, I immediately notice the repetition of the root k-d-sh<\/em>, \u201choly,\u201d is intertwined throughout the chapter with the most concrete details of the ceremony. The two seem inseparable, as if the only way to achieve holiness is by going deeper into the nitty-gritty of the world around us.<\/span><\/p>\n

The chapter opens with \u201cThis is what you shall <\/span>do<\/span><\/em> to them,\u201d as opposed to the usual \u201cThis is what you shall <\/span>say<\/span><\/em>\u2026\u201d The lesson is in the actions, not the words. What actions might you do differently if you thought of them as teaching a lesson?<\/span><\/p>\n

In verse 3 the priests are commanded to put all the various offerings into a single basket. What are our offerings today? We might be tempted to think only of specifically \u201creligious\u201d practices, but this verse tells me not to compartmentalize my life but rather to put everything \u201cin one basket,\u201d to turn everything I do into an offering. Since some of the offerings described here are the priests\u2019 daily food, I ask, what would it look like to eat in a way that was itself an offering? What kind of food would I buy? Where would it come from? How would I put it on the table and in my mouth? Personally, I find myself too often eating while doing something else, a habit I\u2019m trying hard to break, not only for myself but to show my children that eating can be a kind of service to God, and we shouldn\u2019t multitask it.<\/span><\/p>\n

And lastly, I might ask myself, what is so bizarre in my life that I might be tempted to dismiss but in fact has something to teach me?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answering questions such as these can help bring holiness and service into your
