Derived from the Latin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vestire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to clothe, it signifies the formal dressing (also called robing) of an official prior to the assumption of prescribed duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one occasion, I was seeking admission to the library at Oxford University and arrived at the office of the Registrar as he was locking up. When I explained that this was my only opportunity to view a particular manuscript, he graciously reopened the office. However, prior to placing his seal on my pass, he removed his overcoat and put on his gown. I felt that I had gained insight into the Talmud\u2019s declaration that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kohanim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (priests) could not serve if they were not\u2014so to speak\u2014in uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A second observation concerns God\u2019s instruction to Moses to \u201cfill Aaron\u2019s hands and the hands of his sons\u201d (verse 9). This unusual expression led Rashi to speculate on its origin and offer the following parallel. He explained (28:41):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In French, when a ruler appoints someone to a position, he places a leather glove on his hand\u2014called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gant<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in French (as in \u201cto throw down the gauntlet\u201d)\u2014by which means he tenures him in that matter. This placement is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revestir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as in \u201cvestments\u201d and \u201cinvestiture\u201d) and that is filling the hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Rashi, even the customs of the French royal court provide insight in his attempt to make sense of the
