It signifies royalty and suggests both the gaudy and the glamorous. There is even a color called Dragon’s Blood, which Schama reports was believed to owe its particular hue to “the wounds of dragons and elephants locked in mortal combat.” How could you care to wear anything less, or more?

Today’s chapter explodes with color, to a degree not seen since Joseph’s bespoke coat was ripped and bloodied. Of course, there has been a thread of color running throughout, and the entire story of the Exodus can be traced through the bright red blood over the doors in Egypt, the swirling azure and white brininess of the Red Sea before it split, and the endless dull brown sand and the dangerously gleaming gold of the Calf. Here, however, the regalia of the High Priest is laced with color. Verse 6 reads “and they shall make the ephod of gold, and blue, and purple, scarlet and fine twisted linen, the work of the skillful workman.” These hues are joined by the blinding array of precious metals on the breastplate, the half dozen jewels of color made when the world was born that would come to refract and represent the twelve tribes.

We do not usually think of Judaism as prizing the visual. There is the Second Commandment, of course, and the lingering trauma of the glittering gold at Sinai. Perhaps the radiance of the High Priest’s vestments suggests that possibility that color can be redeemed, and that a world without brightness is no place for the sacred. Black fire on white fire instructs, but it is the kaleidoscopic rainbows all around us that tincture the world, and make it worth seeing.

image: Piet Mondriaan, 1930 –
