The transition from the revelation of God\u2019s glory at the end of Exodus 24 to the nitty-gritty details of the Tabernacle\u2019s (<\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/i>) construction in beginning of Exodus 25 is jarring, but the latter is actually a direct continuation of the preceding chapter. Umberto Cassuto explains that the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em> is necessary to maintain the connection between the people and God once they move away from Mount Sinai. It is not intended to enshrine the memory of Mount Sinai, to be a static monument to a one-time event. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rather it is a focal point where that connection can continue and even become bi-directional. Therefore, the Torah says, \u201cL<\/span>et them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell (<\/span>veshakhanti<\/span><\/em>) among them.\u201d God does not reside in the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em>, but rather among people who built it. This is reinforced by <\/span>the transitions between singular and plural verb forms in the Hebrew text: each individual contributes as he or she desires and the collective, the community gathers the contributions, so that its agents can create the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At Sinai, the entire people stood at the foot of the mountain and God spoke to them in the singular, addressing each one individually. Now they must work together. Neither Moses nor master-craftsman Bezalel are capable of building the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em> without the people\u2019s contributions. The individual and the community need each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was true in the past remains true today. Building truly sacred spaces still requires the cooperative efforts of many people, who each contribute what they are able and commission trustworthy, skilled agents to direct the implementation of the shared dream. The leaders cannot create it alone. The involvement of each willing heart is also necessary. Otherwise, the project risks becoming static monument rather than point of contact between people and Beyond. To dwell in this world, God requires not gold, silver & brass; wood, fabric & skins, but rather our freely given efforts to join together in
