A rabbinic tradition from the Mishnaic period (Menahot 43b) connects the color of \u201csapphire\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sappir<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with the required color of the \u201cblue thread\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ptil tekhelet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>tzitzit<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(fringe tassel) [see Numbers 15:28] attached to the corners of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the so-called \u201cprayer-shawl\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Meir (Land of Israel, 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> c. C.E.) said: Why is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tekhelet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> singled out from other colors [for the fulfillment of the commandment of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzitzit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]? Because <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tekhelet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the color of the sea, and the sea is the color of the heavenly firmament and the heavenly firmament is like the Throne of Glory [on which God is enthroned]. As it is said: \u201c\u2026under His feet there was the likeness of a pavement of sapphire, like the very sky for purity\u201d (Exodus 24:10). And it is also written: \u201c\u2026the semblance of a throne, in appearance like sapphire\u201d (Ezekiel 1:26)\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Biblical and Talmudic times, and now again in our day due a remarkable collaboration between traditional learning and scientific research, we are again able to have the biblically commanded <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ptil tekhelet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzitzit<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing this \u201cthread of blue\u201d allows us to imagine the \u201cpavement of sapphire, like the sky for purity\u201d. And through this celestial-blue heavenly firmament, perhaps we may even be able to visualize God enthroned on the Throne of
