Our chapter consists of a reprise of the Revelation of the Law that was described earlier\u2014and in greater detail\u2014in chapter 19. It focuses not on the substance of the revelation itself but on its immediate reception and consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of particular interest here is an observation of Rashi to verse 12. The verse reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord said to Moses: Ascend the mountain towards Me and be there and I shall give you the stone tablets and the Law (<\/span>torah<\/span><\/i>) and commandment (<\/span>mitzvah<\/span><\/i>) that I have written for their guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question troubling Rashi is: We know that God gave Moses the stone tablets on Mt. Sinai, but where is the evidence that He also gave him the Law and (all the) commandments? His answer is:<\/span><\/p>\n

All 613 commandments (<\/span>mitzvot<\/span><\/i>) are incorporated into the ten statements and Rabbi Sa`adya, in the <\/span>Azharot<\/span><\/i> he composed, identified the mitzvot that are incorporated into each statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Azharot<\/span><\/em> (literally, warnings) are a form of liturgical poetry (<\/span>piyyut<\/span><\/i>) often recited (largely by non-Ashkenazi congregations) on the occasion of the reading of the Ten Statements (dibrot<\/em>, “utterances”) on Shavuot. Sa`adya\u2019s Azharot<\/em> (which are published in his <\/span>Siddur<\/span><\/i>) indeed distribute all 613 Torah commandments among one or another of ten categories, represented by the ten statements.<\/span><\/p>\n

An engaging exercise is to guess into which category of the ten one might assign a given law. Take <\/span>kashrut<\/span><\/i>, for example. If you regard it as a hedge against assimilation, it might be in the second (vs. idolatry). If you think its purpose is to enforce physical discipline, it might be in the tenth (do not covet). And if you think it has no particular rationale but is just a part of a cultural tradition, it might be situated in the fifth (honor your
