Why do you try <em>ma tenasun<\/em>\u00a0the LORD?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17:7 &#8211; The place was named &#8220;Massah&#8221; and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and because they tried <em>nasotam<\/em>\u00a0the LORD, saying, \u201cIs the LORD present among us or not?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When God tries people &#8211; and not in the legal sense, but more in the psych-spiritual sense &#8211; as God did Abraham in Genesis 22:1, with the demand to sacrifice his son, it\u2019s seen as a legitimate challenge, testing his mettle, challenging his faith and obedience. When people try God, as they do here, it\u2019s something else again. It\u2019s almost as if they are trying the divine patience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The root \u05e0-\u05e1-\u05d4, <em>n-s-h<\/em>, gives us the verbs in today\u2019s verses (testing, trying) as well as several interesting nouns. The first noun is actually a place name mentioned here: Massah. It is paired with Meribah, from the root \u05e8-\u05d9-\u05d1, <em>r-y-b,<\/em> meaning fight or struggle. So this place is literally named \u201cTrial and Tribulation.\u201d Interestingly, an important word that appears in the very first verse of this chapter, and will be central over the course of the next three books is \u05de\u05e1\u05e2, <em>masa\u2019<\/em> (the final apostrophe representing the Hebrew letter \u05e2 <em>\u2018ayin<\/em>), meaning journey. Depending on how pharyngeal your <em>\u2018ayin<\/em> is, these words are near homonyms, implying deeper connections between the trials, travels and travails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This root has given us some significant, and significantly different, words in modern Hebrew. The kind of test mentioned above is a <em>nisayon<\/em>. That word continues to mean that, but it also now means \u201cexperience\u201d of the kind one might be asked to describe in a job interview. For a more scientific trial, i.e., an experiment, the form \u201c<em>nisui<\/em>\u201d is used. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of the verb has also expanded, as one of the many examples of spiritually freighted words of classical Hebrew becoming secularized and pressed into daily use in contemporary Hebrew.
