Whereas the boundaries of written Torah are set, those of the oral Torah are much fuzzier.

The oral Torah refers to the commentary that reputedly accompanied the written Torah and guide its interpretation. These are teachings, legal and otherwise, that were transmitted orally from one generation to the next. Whether they go all the way back to Sinai or had their origins in First or Second Temple times is a matter of scholarly and theological dispute, but by early rabbinic times (3rd to 2nd centuries B.C.E.) there was certainly a growing body of teaching discussed between teachers and students in houses of study.

Here’s a deep irony: Ask what the Oral Torah is, and you will be directed to a bookshelf – with stacks of books! Over the last two millennia, the “oral” Torah has become embodied in books, orders of magnitude more books than the written Torah. And it keeps growing: any book written today that is a commentary, expansion, codification or in any way bears a serious relationship to this sacred literature, can be considered part of the oral Torah. Oh, the bibliography!

And the oral Torah comprises even more than that: “Rabbi Joshua ben Levi expounded: Scripture, Mishnah, Talmud, Aggadah, and even what a diligent student will teach in the future before his master was already spoken to Moses at Sinai” (J. In this fully extended sense, the term embraces life itself…” (“Nomos and Narrative”).
