A nation of slaves has, inexplicably, become a regional superpower. An invisible God has obliterated the deified pharaoh of Egypt. This story of the exodus will transform the self-perceptions of both Israel and Egypt. But how will their neighbors respond?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We read last chapter of the nation of Amalek, Israel\u2019s eternal nemesis. Amalek attacks Israel from the rear, seeking to find their Achilles heel. This is the sole purpose of their attack; to challenge Israel, and the now apparent truth of the might of their God. The soldiers of Amalek are willing to put their lives on the line to defend the legitimacy of the mindset of Egypt. They will maintain this worldview at all costs, despite the clear proof of its fallacy. Their stubborn refusal to open their eyes leads to their ultimate demise; they have no place in the world of truth and justice which is to be constructed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter, on the other hand, opens with the story of Jethro, a man held in such high esteem that the Torah later records his name as Hovav, or beloved. Jethro had made it in life, achieving the highest levels of financial, social and even religious success in his native land. It would have been entirely excusable for Jethro to view the rumors of Israel\u2019s amazing achievements skeptically; even if they were true, they threatened the way of life which had granted him such extraordinary success as a priest in Midian. Living by the religious ethos that he preached, however, he was unwilling to continue serving false gods. He happily left everything behind, giving up his gods, wealth and status to catch up with this nation whose deity was clearly the one, true God. It is for this idealistic pursuit of truth regardless of cost that Jethro is honored with the parashah of the giving of the Torah, that his name may live on as an exemplar of what it means to be a person of
