Sinai is an incredible lesson on leadership and humility from Moses\u2019 father-in-law, Jethro. Jethro brings Moses\u2019 wife, Zipporah and his sons, Gershom and Eliezer, to the wilderness where the Israelites are encamped. While there, Jethro watches his son-in-law help the members of the community solve their disputes from morning until evening. Jethro cannot believe what he is seeing, he tells Moses that he will wear himself out and the people as well because the task is too great to be done alone. Jethro instructs Moses to find righteous men in the community to serve as judges below him so that he can focus on the major disputes and leave the minutiae to everyone else. The delegation of duties proves to be successful and Jethro returns home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important lesson here is found in Jethro\u2019s words to Moses in 18:18 \u201c\u2026you will surely wear yourself out, and these people as well\u2026\u201d Moses is not only sacrificing himself for this role, but the entire community. The demand on Moses weighs heavy on him which means as the day goes on he is not at his best and the decisions he makes may no longer be the best for the community. His lack of support hurts everyone, but that is a hard thing to admit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too often when we are put in charge of a task we convince ourselves that it means only we can do it, that asking for help will be a sign of weakness or admitting failure, when in reality no one works alone. Jethro\u2019s relationship with Moses allows him to help Moses step back and recognize that he needs help. I hope that we all have someone like that in our lives when the demands placed upon us are too much.
