","content":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most cherished myths about the revelation on Sinai is that all Jews were present for that foundational event. The Talmud claims that even converts, who by definition do not descend from Jews, were present in spirit at the giving of the Torah (b. Shabbat 146a). According to some readings, however, three Israelites missed the Revelation entirely: Moses\u2019 wife and two sons, whom Yitro brought to the foot of Mount Sinai (Exodus 18:2-5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses\u2019 children are scarcely mentioned in the Bible. An ancient tradition assumes that Jonathan son of Gershom son of Manasseh, who ministered Micah\u2019s notorious idol (Judges 18) was the grandson of Moses\u2019 first-born, Manasseh. Tellingly, the Talmud relates that Jonathan\u2019s sin arose from a break-down in communication:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Jonathan said:] \u201cI received this [tradition] from the house of my father\u2019s father (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i.e.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Moses): A person should be willing to hire himself out for strange-worship (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i.e. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">idol worship) if it means not taking charity from people.\u201d He thought that this referred to actual strange worship, but it is not so; rather [Moses meant] \u201cservice that is strange for him.\u201d As Rav said to Rav Kahana: Skin a carcass in the market and take a fee, but do not say: I am a great man and this is beneath me. (b. Bava Bathra 110a)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragically, for the lawgiver\u2019s own family who missed the Revelation, the Torah could only be accessed secondarily, as if in a game of telephone. For everyone else, even in future generations, Torah is known innately, from our metaphysical presence at Sinai.
