","content":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story of today\u2019s chapter is best told, perhaps, through the symbolism of the rocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After wandering for several days with nothing to drink, the Israelites protest against Moses for \u201cbringing us out to this desert to die of thirst.\u201d Moses, distraught, turns to God, who instructs him to strike a rock; Moses does, and water issues forth, bringing the drought to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a familiar story, yet its conclusion still seems strange. Of all possible ways for God to orchestrate a resolution to this crisis, why do so by having Moses strike a rock? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer, it would appear, lies in Moses\u2019 appeal to God one verse earlier: \u201cWhat shall I do for this people? A little longer, and they shall stone me!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a moment of panic, the Israelites channel their anger by preparing to throw rocks at Moses. To this, God counters: Instead of striking your leader with rocks, why not strike the rocks themselves? Instead of attacking people, why not attack problems? The very force you were planning to use destructively can hold within it the solution to all of your worries\u2014if only you approach it constructively, and collaboratively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this perspective, the people\u2019s gesture a few verses later could hardly be more fitting: \u201cBut Moses arms grew heavy; so they brought him a rock, and placed it under him, and he sat on it&#8230;\u201d At the start of our chapter, the people were ready to cast rocks at Moses. Now, at its end, they bring them to him &#8211; not to strike, but to support; not to blame, but to buttress; not to accost, but to assist, as he leads them through their next moment of crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They thus demonstrate that they have learned their lesson. When things don\u2019t go our way, it\u2019s easy to \u201cthrow rocks\u201d at others. Yet the energy we spend criticizing is always better spent collaborating.
