Winter. \u00a0Night. In the cold, a bare tree
\n<\/span>Stares
\n<\/span>At stars
\n<\/span>More numerous than grains of sand on heaven\u2019s warm beach,
\n<\/span>More distant than God\u2019s promise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within its trunk, the tree stores
\n<\/span>Sweetness
\n<\/span>Of fruit not yet formed,
\n<\/span>Green
\n<\/span>Of leaves not yet fashioned.<\/span><\/p>\n

As winds shriek,
\n<\/span>The tree shudders,
\n<\/span>Stripped of its leaves\u2019 thick scarves,
\n<\/span>Unable to taste its fruit\u2019s ripeness,
\n<\/span>Waiting for the spring of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in the nearby, unheated hut,
\n<\/span>A woodcutter
\n<\/span>Stretches his hand to the wall
\n<\/span>And takes down the hanging
