La Samchinan Anisa<\/b>–\u201cWe do not rely on miracles,\u201d we learn in the Talmud. It\u2019s not that they don\u2019t happen–the frogs jump, the sea parts, the manna falls. But not usually. Usually it\u2019s just us humans stumbling along, doing the best that we can.<\/span><\/p>\n

Given that we humans are fallible by design, it may be tempting to sit back and not engage much at all. That\u2019s what Moses suggests as the recently freed Israelite slaves stand at the sea: \u201cHave no fear! Stand by and witness the deliverance which the Lord will work for you today…The Lord will battle for you; you hold your peace!\u201d (Ex 14:14-15) But Jewish tradition does not grant immunity. God is omnipresent, but God also needs <\/span>us<\/span><\/em> to move the work forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, Nachshon ben Aminadav. \u201c[T]his tribe said: I am not going into the sea first, and that tribe said: I am not going into the sea first. Then, in jumped the prince of Judah, Nachshon ben Aminadab, and descended into the sea first, accompanied by his entire tribe… (Sotah 37a).<\/span><\/p>\n

Miracles are awesome, literally, awesome–they are by definition fail-proof. But we live in the real world; failure is possible. We cannot wait on the banks of the shores for a miracle to arrive. Waiting. Waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, take a page from the Talmud, Pesachim 64b, in which the ancient rabbis argued as to how exactly just the right number of people stood in the Temple court when the time came to make the offerings on Passover eve. Some said it was a miracle that the right number was there–that God put the right people in the room. The gates, they magically closed when the right number of people entered the courtyard. Maybe. But others said it differently: it was the <\/span>Jews themselves<\/em> <\/span>who determined when the right people were there. They closed the gates. They made the work happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the day perhaps it\u2019s not only that we don\u2019t wait for a miracle–it\u2019s that <\/span>we <\/span>make<\/em> <\/span>them ourselves. <\/span>And that, in and of itself, is its own kind of
