So you thought we left Egypt behind? Patience. The Red Sea is still ahead!<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the final parting from Egypt. The event that will change the Israelite mentality from awe of the Egyptians to awe of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does it happen?<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase One:<\/b> God hardens Pharaoh’s heart and he regrets allowing the Israelites to leave Egypt (all those slaves – gone…) and he and his cavalry set off in hot pursuit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase Two:<\/b> Panic in the Israelite camp: “And they were very frightened and the Israelites cried out to the Lord” (14:10). They regretted leaving Egypt so much that “we’d be better off serving Egypt than dying in the desert” (14:12). Moses reassures them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase Three:<\/b> The parting of the Red Sea. Following instructions, Moses stretches his arm out over the sea. A powerful east wind blows all night and then: “and the waters were divided. \u00a0And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry ground; and the waters were a wall for them on their right hand and on their left” (14:21-22).<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase Four:<\/b> The Egyptians pursue the Israelites into the sea. God creates a commotion in the Egyptian camp that makes it hard for them to advance (14:24-25).<\/span><\/p>\n

Phase Five:<\/b> The sea closes back up. “And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, all of Pharaoh’s army that followed them into the sea” (14:29).<\/span><\/p>\n

Culmination: <\/b>“And Israel saw the great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians, and the people were in awe of the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses” (14:31).<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. There are better and worse deaths<\/b>. What do you think of the argument in v. 11: “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the desert?”<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. We told you so<\/b> (14:12). It must be in our DNA since Biblical times. Here it’s: “Isn’t this what we told you back in Egypt…?”<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Respect!<\/b> Look for it in v. 17-18.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Helpers<\/b>. God is responsible for the deliverance, as Moses promises: “The Lord will fight for you, and you – be quiet” (14:14), but there you can also find the roles of His helpers – the Angel of the Lord and
