{"id":41677,"date":"2018-10-09T05:05:59","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T02:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=41677"},"modified":"2022-05-02T09:24:51","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T06:24:51","slug":"exodus-13-our-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/exodus-13-our-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Exodus 13: Our Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"41677","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":false,"related_cahpter":"63","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Our Story","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 13 has two elements (like Chapter 12, just a little more neatly laid out): The story of how we left Egypt and ways to remember the story of the Exodus for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the Festival of the Matzot (13:5-10) two more mnemonic devices are established for remembering the experience of the Exodus:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>&#8220;Sanctify every firstborn male to Me<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230; of the Israelites, man and beast alike, they are Mine&#8221; (13:2); you can read the specific instructions in v. 11-13. What does the law mention? If you read the previous chapter you already know, and &#8220;should your son ask you tomorrow: What is this?&#8221; (13:14) you can tell him that it&#8217;s because &#8220;Pharaoh refused to let us go and the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt (13:16).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;And it shall be as a <\/span><b>sign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your hand and as <\/span><b>frontlets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between your eyes&#8221; (13:16). This mysterious commandment is what we know as the Tefillin (phylacteries) of the hand and the head, which contain parchment written with verses from the Torah, including a mention of the Exodus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now for the journey itself, which takes place in Verses 17-22. The route chosen from Egypt to Canaan isn&#8217;t the shortest one (through the land of the Philistines); it&#8217;s actually the long way, through the desert. Why? The nation of slaves leaving Egypt isn&#8217;t yet ready to deal with the dangers, &#8220;for God said: Lest the people change their minds when they see war [approaching] and return to Egypt&#8221; (13:17).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Israelites are under close guard as they travel. Night and day. &#8220;The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not leave the people&#8221; (13:22).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bon voyage!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>The House of Bondage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (13:3) &#8211; a new nickname for Egypt which nicely reflects what happened there and will appear in the Bible quite often from here on in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>The month of Spring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (13:4). The Exodus takes place in springtime. The text mentions not only the date but the season &#8211; spring. And the festival of Passover will continue to be celebrated in springtime from now on.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>And you shall tell your son<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (13:8). Passing the story on from father to son is the key to preserving the memory. The sons with their questions and the father with his answers appear in several verses in the story of the Exodus and reappear with the four sons in the Passover Haggadah.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Armed?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;And the Israelites ascended from Egypt armed [also &#8216;in fives&#8217;]&#8221; (13:18). What does this mean? Were they equipped with weapons? Did they march in ranks of five? Did only one-fifth of the Hebrews leave Egypt? Look to the commentators for answers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>They kept their promises<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moses and the Israelites take Joseph&#8217;s bones with them, just as they promised at the end of the Book of Genesis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
