Each image focuses on a different part of the process, either the sacrifice itself, the smearing of its blood, or the passing-by of the destroying angel. The artists&#8217; varying renditions raise questions regarding the purpose of the blood, the nature of the offering, and the identity of &#8220;the destroyer.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-41637\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-angel-of-death-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-angel-of-death-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-angel-of-death-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-angel-of-death-652x420.jpg 652w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-angel-of-death.jpg 931w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the illustration entitled &#8220;Angel of Death&#8221;, the destroying angel appears to be the intended audience for the blood smeared on the doorposts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-41638\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-margetson-261x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-margetson-261x300.jpg 261w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-margetson-365x420.jpg 365w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ex12-margetson.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Margetson&#8217;s image, in contrast, it is the Egyptians who look at the bloodied doorpost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Biblical text, who was intended to see the blood? In Exodus 12:13, God<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cwhen I see the blood I will pass over you, so that no plague will destroy you\u201d &#8212; \u00a0suggestin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g that the blood is for God Himself, so He can prevent the destroyer from harming the Israelites. This, though, raises the question \u2013 could not God have saved the nation without the sign of blood? Some commentators,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therefore, assert that the blood was actually a sign for the Egyptians to view, to prove to them the worthlessness of their gods.
