One Last Plague<\/b><\/p>\n

“One last plague” (11:1) and it’s over. The plague will actually only take place in the next chapter, but here we get the promo as well as a sneak peek at preparations for the Exodus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Borrowing vessels<\/b>. The Exodus from Egypt is approaching, and with it, the following instructions to Moses: “Speak to the people and let them ask every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor vessels of silver and gold” (11:2). Why do the Egyptians let them have them? Because God “gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians,” and also because, after everything that took place in the previous chapters, Moses was very highly respected (11:3).<\/span><\/p>\n

Warning of the upcoming plague of the firstborn<\/b>. The tenth and most devastating plague of all doesn’t come as a surprise. Moses is sent to Pharaoh with a detailed message about what is going to happen: “Around midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt… and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die” (11:4-5), but, as expected, “and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he did let the Israelites go out of his land” (11:10).<\/span><\/p>\n

What will happen in the next chapter? The plague of the firstborn, as was promised. But not only that…<\/span><\/p>\n

Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Borrowing with no intention to return<\/b>. Do you find this embarrassing? The Bible doesn’t seem to. But in the Talmud (Sanhedrin 91:A) is an opinion that addresses this matter and sees the gold and silver vessels as fair payment for the years of slavery.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The promise is fulfilled<\/b>. In Chapter 3, at the Burning Bush, before all this began, God promised: “And I will give the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians and when they leave they will not leave empty-handed” (3:21), and now it actually happens (11:3).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    3. <\/span>From… to… and even<\/b>. The plague of the firstborn is to strike all the firstborn males of every class. Even the firstborn animals. This gives us some idea of Egypt’s socioeconomic structure – the lowest class is “the handmaiden behind the grinding mill” (11:5)<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
