You menfolk <em>hagevarim<\/em>\u00a0go and worship the LORD, since that is what you want.\u201d And they were expelled from Pharaoh\u2019s presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above quote is Pharaoh\u2019s response to Moses\u2019 bold proclamation of who is to leave Egypt (v. 9): Moses replied, \u201cWe will all go, young and old: we will go with our sons and daughters, our flocks and herds; for we must observe the LORD\u2019s festival.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Pharaoh was only down with the men leaving. The word used is <em>gever<\/em> (sing.), <em>gevarim<\/em> (plural). This word is from the root \u05d2-\u05d1-\u05e8, <em>g-b-r<\/em>, which underlies a number of basic Hebrew words. The noun <em>gever<\/em> means adult male, though originally referred to a rooster. But it means more than \u05d0\u05d9\u05e9, \u201c<em>ish<\/em>,\u201d generic for &#8220;man,&#8221; since the word <em>gever<\/em> emphasizes &#8220;masculinity&#8221; (<em>gavriut<\/em>) or being &#8220;manly&#8221; (<em>gavri<\/em>). There is a female version \u2013 \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05ea, <em>giveret<\/em> \u2013 but this means more like &#8220;lady&#8221; or &#8220;Mrs.&#8221; \u2013 as in \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05ea \u05db\u05d4\u05df, <em>giveret<\/em> Cohen, Mrs. Cohen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another noun from this root is \u201c<em>gibor<\/em>.\u201d Ask any Israeli child who or what a <em>gibor<\/em>, is, and they will say a hero. It could be a <em>gibor milchamah<\/em>, a war hero, or a \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8-\u05e2\u05dc, <em>gibor-&#8216;al<\/em>, a superhero, of the comic book variety. That applies to \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4, <em>giborah<\/em>, fem., a brave, valiant or heroic female, as well. The classic rabbinic tradition, though, has a very different definition. \u05d0\u05d9\u05d6\u05d4\u05d5 \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8? <em>Eyzehu gibor<\/em>? they asked (Avot 4:1), &#8220;Who is a [true] hero? \u05d4\u05db\u05d5\u05d1\u05e9 \u05d0\u05ea \u05d9\u05e6\u05e8\u05d5, <em>hakovesh et yitzro<\/em>, \u201cone who can conquer their own inclinations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In kabbalistic tradition \u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4, <em>gevurah<\/em>, is one of the ten sefirot, emanations or facets of God. It is stands opposite to \u05d7\u05e1\u05d3, <em>chesed<\/em> and refers to God&#8217;s power or judgment, as opposed to mercy or love. The angel \u05d2\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d0\u05dc, <em>gavriel<\/em>, Gabriel is connected to this, as the name is to the root. God&#8217;s power for instance is evident in the triumph of life over death, referenced in the second blessing of the Amidah, &#8220;the standing prayer (also known as the &#8220;prayer of the 18 [blessings]&#8221;) that speaks of eternal life, and is known as \u05d1\u05e8\u05db\u05ea \u05d4\u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, <em>birkat hegevurot<\/em>. Likewise, a person who has reached the venerable age of 80, is said to have \u05d4\u05d2\u05d9\u05e2 \u05dc\u05d2\u05d1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea, <em>higi&#8217;a legevurot<\/em>, has reached the age of valor.
