An \u00a0image from the Sarajevo Haggadah, a tapestry based on an oil painting by Nicolas Poussin, and the illustration from the LaHaye Bible, all depict the miracle of Aaron’s staff turning into a serpent. The artists differ widely in how they envision the serpent and in the way they understand the miracle as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most fundamental difference between the portrayals is each artist’s depiction of the \u201ctanin,\u201d usually translated as \u201cserpent.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Poussin renders it as a serpent.<\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast, the LaHaye Bible depicts it as a dragon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sarajevo Haggadah illustrates it as a lizard. <\/span><\/p>\n

Which is correct? The Biblical text is unclear, and although the word appears in several places, the various contexts can sustain a broad range of possible meanings, from crocodile to serpent. <\/span><\/p>\n
