\u201cAnd the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry land; and the waters formed a wall for them on their right and on their left.\u201d (Exodus 14:22)<\/span><\/p>\n

How well I remember that night \u2014 the moon, aflame,
\nAs the prophet stretched his hand over the sea;
\nThe waves, obeying, split to the right, to the left.
\nMy father grabbed my hand, and my sister\u2019s, too,
\nWhen without a word, we left the beach behind.<\/p>\n

A wall of water, forty cubits high,
\nArose as straight and sharp as desert cliffs;
\nA clan of dolphins swam to the edge of the wall
\nTo stare at people crossing the sea on foot
\nOn a sea-floor drier than desert dunes at noon.<\/p>\n

I thrust my hand into the liquid wall
\nTo touch a yellow sea-horse flashing by;
\nA school of eels twisted their bodies\u2019 shapes
\nTo form black letters of words that only a child
\nCould understand and read as praise of God.<\/p>\n

We children of Israel gazed at a huge blue-whale
\nThat circled nearby and solemnly sang a psalm;
\nA flock of fish in rainbow colors swam
\nWarily by, amazed at people below
\nWho walked through the sea in the light of the moon afire.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

All night we children of Israel advanced in awe.
\nBehind us, pillars of fire and cloud stood guard,
\nOur shields defending us from Pharaoh\u2019s hosts.
\nMy father and mother laughed, \u2014 or cried, \u2014 or both,
\nLeaving behind deserts of Egyptian salt.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How well I remember that night \u2014 the moon, ablaze,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Lit up our path as we walked on the floor of the sea.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I was only a child of five or six; since then<\/span>
\n<\/span>Seventy years have passed; but I close my eyes \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>My father\u2019s hand holds mine as I taste the
