Warsaw, August 1942<\/span><\/p>\n

At the <\/span>Umschlagplatz<\/span><\/i>, the train to Treblinka,
\n<\/span>Ready to transport the Jews of Warsaw
\n<\/span>To where people are transported through chimneys
\n<\/span>As smoke,
\n<\/span>Waits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smoke from the locomotive,
\n<\/span>Gray, thick, in an amorphous column
\n<\/span>Rises, then drifts, then disperses and dissipates in the summer air;
\n<\/span>Like Polish Jews;
\n<\/span>Like hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our fathers taught us
\n<\/span><\/i>The Jews were led in the desert to the promised land
\n<\/span><\/i>By a column of cloud by day,
\n<\/span><\/i>And a column of fire by night,
\n<\/span><\/i>Hiding the God of Israel\u2019s glory.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

But in the desert of Poland, the Jews are led to their final solution
\n<\/span>For the greater glory of the Third Reich
\n<\/span>Packed in cattle cars on a train
\n<\/span>(Or is it a mobile cemetery with iron wheels
\n<\/span>For filaments of smoke who do not yet know they are smoke?)<\/span><\/p>\n

The passive locomotive impassively emits a column of smoke
\n<\/span>As prosaic as despair,
\n<\/span>As transient
\n<\/span>As hope
\n<\/span>Embodied in a work-certificate ignited by a match.<\/span><\/p>\n

If only our fathers had learned
\n<\/span>From columns of cloud and fire in the desert
\n<\/span>How to reveal the hidden glory,
\n<\/span>How to retrieve and reverse and revive
