Nothing else in Jewish history has captured the emotions and thoughts of Jews throughout the millennia like the Exodus from Egypt. The Exodus story has been told and retold by Jews throughout the generations. Its drama has emboldened Jews in times of despair, and Jewish leaders have used Exodus themes to stir people out of complacency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Jews, \u201cthe Exodus\u201d refers to much more than a specific one-time historical event. Rather, the Exodus is the central and enduring set of concepts, motifs, rituals, and symbols that enable Jews to find meaning in their identity. Jews use the Exodus as a means of self-understanding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Exodus is the past shaping the present. It is not an event that is merely ancient history, of interest just to antiquarians and historians. The Exodus is the distant past living again in contemporary reality and action. The Exodus may be grounded in the past, but it is experienced in the present. The Exodus becomes the major pattern of history and deliverance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The past transforms present reality. The Exodus creates a meaningful and accessible Jewish past, one that shapes and reshapes how Jews perceive themselves to be \u2013 powerful in times of powerlessness, exalted in times of humiliation, and free in times of oppression. The Exodus enables Jews to see beyond the limits of their contemporary existence by utilizing the past to lay claim to the
