1) The Wise Son<\/span><\/p>\n

Passover night, Vilna, 1820<\/span><\/p>\n

Aryeh-Leib opens the new <\/span>Haggadah<\/span><\/i> his father has given him,
\n<\/span>Inscribed in Hebrew with the family genealogy
\n<\/span>And a dedication: \u00a0\u201cFor my son
\n<\/span>In hope and prayer.\u201d
\n<\/span>Aryeh-Leib traces the letters with his fingers;
\n<\/span>The letters seem to him to rise and circle, like flocks
\n<\/span>Of \u00a0ravens that carry him to the study-halls of Pumpedita,
\n<\/span>Obedient ravens released from arks to search for dry land,
\n<\/span>Trustworthy ravens that bring bread and meat to hungry prophets,
\n<\/span>And when the boy finally closes the Book,
\n<\/span>The ravens, gracious and grateful, return to the Book
\n<\/span>To roost.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) The Wicked Son<\/span><\/p>\n

Passover night, Vienna, 1880<\/span><\/p>\n

Albert-Leopold wears his black suit and black tie
\n<\/span>This evening, as every evening, as he goes to the ballroom to waltz.
\n<\/span>The old <\/span>Haggadah<\/span><\/i> bequeathed by his grandfather is stored away in a closet;
\n<\/span>He has no desire to skim through outdated, useless books,
\n<\/span>Scribbled with outdated, useless Hebrew letters, as extinct
\n<\/span>As flying dinosaurs that once glided in humid skies
\n<\/span>Before being consumed in a fire-ball
\n<\/span>When a derelict asteroid impacted on the jungle\u2019s surface.
\n<\/span>Albert-Leopold waltzes and flirts, drinks beer and dreams of hunting foxes
\n<\/span>As the band plays on.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) The Simple Son<\/span><\/p>\n

Passover night, Tel-Aviv, 1940<\/span><\/p>\n

When Ari\u2019s family fled Europe,
\n<\/span>They managed to take with them several of the old family books.
\n<\/span>Having learned Hebrew, Ari sits and opens the yellow-paged Haggadah;
\n<\/span>He wakens long dormant words after their winter migration
\n<\/span>By chanting them;
\n<\/span>For him, the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land.
\n<\/span>As Ari closes his eyes and sings;
\n<\/span>Little foxes flee from the vineyards.<\/span><\/p>\n

4) The Son Who Does Not Know How To Ask<\/span><\/p>\n

Passover night, \u2014 , 2000<\/span><\/p>\n

A. sits at the table and stares
\n<\/span>At the strange Book in front of him,
\n<\/span>Full of questions
\n<\/span>But not knowing what and when and who to ask.
\n<\/span>The boy doesn\u2019t dare open it, and wonders:
\n<\/span>\u201cIf I open the Book, will it become a portal
\n<\/span>To a world of black magic,
\n<\/span>Where gray dragons clasp me in their talons
\n<\/span>As they carry me to their dens?
\n<\/span>But what if the Book is a doorway to Paradise
\n<\/span>Where angels fly
\n<\/span>And reveal the secrets of God\u2019s Throne
\n<\/span>To anyone who asks?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The little boy, sighing inaudibly in front of the unopened Book,
\n<\/span>Sits patiently, waiting
\n<\/span>For
