\u201cAnd there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there never has been nor shall ever be again. \u00a0But against all the Children of Israel, no dog shall whet his tongue \u2026\u201d (Exodus 11:6-7)<\/span><\/p>\n

Srulik left last night.
\n<\/span>A hasty hug; a quick good-bye;
\n<\/span>And he\u2019s gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

We belonged to the same master
\n<\/span>Who hit us and whipped us and cursed us both,
\n<\/span>\u201cJewish dog.\u201d
\n<\/span>Which really brought us together,
\n<\/span>Two half-moons lighting up our dark \u2014
\n<\/span>He the Jew, I the dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was leashed to the gate to guard the slaves,
\n<\/span>To make sure they couldn\u2019t leave the ghetto;
\n<\/span>But me and Srulik would sneak out
\n<\/span>Under the fence in the evenings
\n<\/span>To play hide-and-seek by the river.<\/span><\/p>\n

My master never, never gave me enough to eat,
\n<\/span>So me and Srulik would go fishing.
\n<\/span>If we caught a fish with the little net he made,
\n<\/span>We\u2019d share it \u2014 half for me,
\n<\/span>Half he\u2019d save for his sisters.
\n<\/span>Once, we hid in the reeds and bulrushes,
\n<\/span>Watching herons feed in the still waters,
\n<\/span>Then rise and fly away in flocks of white and pink.<\/span><\/p>\n

But afterwards the Bad Times came,
\n<\/span>When the cradle of the Holy Infant Horus cracked
\n<\/span>And His sacred mother, our Blessed Lady Isis the vulture-headed,
\n<\/span>Flew away like the herons;<\/span><\/p>\n

Ra, the mighty sun-god, was swallowed by the moon;
\n<\/span>The eye of the earth turned white-blind,
\n<\/span>And even my master\u2019s staff shattered.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the river turned to blood,
\n<\/span>Srulik gave me his water.<\/span><\/p>\n

When lice attacked me, wave after wave,
\n<\/span>A living, crawling, biting sea,
\n<\/span>Srulik spent hours combing and brushing my fur.<\/span><\/p>\n

When boils covered me, even my nose, even inside my ears,
\n<\/span>Srulik found herbs to soothe my itching.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came the hail \u2014 that was the worst \u2014
\n<\/span>Arrows of ice with pointed swords of white fire inside;
\n<\/span>But Srulik ran out of his hut to find me;
\n<\/span>He carried me back to his home
\n<\/span>Where I slept next to him on his mat.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when darkness enveloped us,
\n<\/span>A black fog suffocating us alive,
\n<\/span>Srulik was my light.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re burying my master\u2019s first-born son this morning.
\n<\/span>But I \u2014 I mourn my Srulik.<\/span><\/p>\n

He left last night, together with all the other Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n

A hasty hug. \u00a0A quick good-bye.<\/span><\/p>\n
