all the borders of Egypt; never before had there been so many locusts, and never again will there be so many.&#8221; (Exodus 10:14)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">At noon, above the desert dunes, a stain<br \/>\nOf rusty brown expands across the sky.<br \/>\n\u201cThey come, the locusts come,\u201d the peasants cry<br \/>\nAnd beg the gods to spare their crops. \u00a0In vain.<br \/>\nThe locusts fall like heavy, dirty rain,<br \/>\nLike waterfalls that flood the sky and dye<br \/>\nThe blue a deathly, reddish brown; they fly<br \/>\nUpon each leaf, each blade, each stalk of grain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus like the blue, the green is raped and razed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tallest palms bow low, weighed down by swarms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of insect eyes, emotionless and cold.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then at dawn, the peasants gaze, amazed,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As locusts shake their wings and shine, all palms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aflame in hues of topaz, bronze and
