Chapter 6 takes us to a behind-the-scenes pep talk.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this pep talk we’ll hear, along with Moses, the plan for deliverance in detail – a plan to be implemented in several stages:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0Ending slavery in Egypt: “And I will remove you from under the burdens of Egypt and deliver you from their bondage and deliver you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments” (6:6).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Making a covenant: “And I will take you as My nation and I will be your God and you will know that I am the Lord your God” (6:7).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Returning to Canaan: “And I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob…” (6:8).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Encouraging, isn’t it? But when Moses tries to convey this message to the people – “but they would not listen to Moses due to their lack of spirit and their grueling labor” (6:9). Natural but tough.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Another peek behind the scenes of the story – a listing of the family tree of Moses and Aaron. So we know exactly where the tribe of Levi comes from. A good family, all in all.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Points to ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. The Forefathers<\/b>. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are mentioned twice: in Verse 3, God speaks of their relationship, and in Verse 8, God promises to keep His promise to the forefathers and give the Promised Land to the Israelites.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. God’s name<\/b>. According to Verse 6 there’s something new here. God revealed Himself to the forefathers as “El Shaddai.” In the revelation in this chapter God has a new name!<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Different words for deliverance<\/b>. A series of verbs in the Divine plan (verses 6-8) represent four different words for redemption (the number four is an important element of the Passover Seder – four cups of wine, four sons, four questions…): “And I will remove you,” “and I will rescue you,” “and I will deliver you,” “and I will take you” – and a fifth: “and I will bring you.”<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Women in the family tree<\/b>. Two women are mentioned by name and one by her nickname: Jocheved, Amram’s aunt whom he married (6:20), Elisheva Bat-Aminadav, sister of Nachshon, who married Aaron (6:22), and… “the Canaanite woman,” mother of Saul, son of Simon (6:15). Anyone who’s curious about what’s hiding behind this nickname can find fascinating answers in the Midrash.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
